HAPPY NEW YEAR

I trust you had a good start to the New Year (freezing stormy weather apart.)

TRAIN AND TRACK

I reported a couple of months ago the the canopy on Carlton Street was to be taken down. It has now happened. This is financed by the Transpenine Route Upgrade “first and last mile” fund. This will also fund improvements to Station Road, Tickle Cock Bridge and the Beancroft Road subway including CCTV and enhanced lighting.

TransPenine Express has increased the frequency of its train journeys between Manchester and York via Castleford and Wakefield to one an hour, seven days a week.

I have expressed our gratitude for this to the train company while pointing out aspiration for some services to go to Scarborough.

TOWN CENTRE

The M&S building is being taken over by Heron Foods, and White Rose opticians are moving into the old Santander building. These moves to larger premises are good as smaller vacant units are more likely to come back into use.

PLANNING

A revised phasing and delivery plan for dwellings on the C6 and Nestlé sites has been received. Outline planning permission has previously been granted. Hopefully, this means a full planning application for phase 1 (of 4) covering the Nestlé site will be submitted shortly.

LIBRARY AND MUSEUMS CONSULTATIONS

The council is holding two consultations - one on the opening hours of libraries and the other on the opening hours of museums and Pontefract Castle. Information about both can be found at Castleford Library and Castleford Museum, as well as online on the Wakefield Council website.. Both consultations finish at 5pm on 14th March 2025.

COUNCIL BUDGET

To have your say about the council’s proposed budget for 2025/26 please complete the survey at https://eu.surveymonkey.com/r/WakefieldCouncilBudgetProposals

The consultation ends on 31st January 2025. The budget will then go to cabinet for approval and to full council in March for ratification.
