CASTLEFORD DAILY BRIEFING OF NEWS AND EVENTS 15 OCTOBER 2025

Compiled by Tony Wallis of “Talk Castleford with Tony’

Today is the Annual Meeting of the Castleford Heritage Trust, another successful Castleford group, that illustrates how people coming together, having discussions and taking actions as a result makes success for the town.

When the group first formed to mark the new millennium with a new Market Clock, calling itself 'Time for Castleford', its members had no idea that their conversations would eventually lead to taking over a great town building, the mill on Aire Street, creating a buzzing, memorable and community centered asset by the river.

This year is the group's 25th anniversary and events are being held at what is now called Queen's Mill. It's a success story demonstrating how the trustees, volunteers and the community work together to make the town a better place.

While I usually avoid signaling out individuals for praise, because it's not fair to the other unsung heroes and heroines, on this occasion I make an exception to mention the late Alison Drake. She had a passion for her town and took the brave decision for the trust to take over the mill. I had the privilege of being her friend ever since we were in the same  primary school class and supporting her in her achievements. Alison was a great believer that talk should lead to action. Her faith was that by doing so, success would surely follow. The mill is her testament to this.

Yesterday and today, I illustrated two Castleford groups that showed talk, act and success. There are others, such as the Friends of Castleford Library, the Castleford Historical Society and the groups that improve our parks. These are the rainbows that shine in our gloomy sky, that show our community spirit is very much alive.
