CASTLEFORD DAILY BRIEFING OF NEWS AND EVENTS 14 OCTOBER 2025
Compiled by Tony Wallis of “Talk Castleford with Tony’
Talking is the important first step, the foundation, of the actions that lead to success. Today and tomorrow I report on 2 successful Castleford projects that came about from people talking. Often the most successful projects aren't planned but are dynamic; moving and changing as the narrative changes, being flexible while sticking to their intentions.
The 2 groups I am talking about have been going for about a couple of decades now, while many others have disappeared. Their success is their belief in talking (meeting regularly), taking action knowing this leads to success.
The first group is GREAT (a great acronym) that stands for Glasshoughton and Redhill Environmental Action Team. I set the foundation of the residents' group when the council informed me no group existed to access government funding. The talk of residents was also of concern about a developer wanting a road built alongside a recreation ground.
Over the years, GREAT, thanks to its members and volunteers, has become a success story. The road plan was stopped, with council help the group found funding for play equipment on the land. It holds an annual fun day and at the George V a Christmas party for the residents' children. Both of these have now become local traditions.
This is why it is really good to talk. My aim is that by discussing our ideas, hopes and concerns we can get together and turn problems into opportunities for success.
Tomorrow, I talk about another local group I am involved with.
