COUNCILLOR WALLIS - CASTLEFORD CENTRAL AND GLASSHOUGHTON WARD REPORT - SEPTEMBER 2025

COUNCILLOR TONY WALLIS - WARD 4 REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2025

I attended the VJ Day 80th ceremony at the War Memorial

Traffic management on Churchfield Lane

This and the roads that come off it have always been a problem. A few years ago I arranged a public meeting with the residents’ group. Another one is to be held soon.  Over the years, the council has bought in improvements but there’s always more that can be done.

Just yesterday, I had to stop while approaching the roundabout on Churchfield Lane. A driver had decided not go around the roundabout.

Former Airedale Hotel - derelict eyesore becomes a success

I am now pleased to see this once derelict building will be in full use from next month. The upstairs are flats, the ground floor opens next month (October 2025) as an Asda Express.

Congratulations to ‘Forever After’

This small business has always been a favourite of mine and I’ve always supported it. I was pleased when it relocated from Pontefract to Castleford. I bought David Waddington’s new book about Fryston from there even though I could have bought it cheaper online. It is now on the list the nation’s best 100 small businesses.

New cinema opens

I attended the new Vue Epic at Xscape on opening day (to watch ‘Bad Guys 2’ with the family). I like the “serve yourself” atmosphere of the foyer.

Care Quality Commission rates adult social care provision

The chief inspector says the council narrowly missed an overall good rating and acknowledges the council has already started on an improvement journey. Four of the categories are rated “good,” with the others rated “needing improvement.”

Valley Gardens

My love for the Valley Gardens goes back years. From the time when the council wanted to remove the play area to pay for road repairs and I made a case out for it to remain, to the time I formed the original Friends of Valley Gardens. The present Friends of Valley Gardens are doing excellent work. The Valley Gardens is the latest park to benefit from the decision to improve or replace aging play equipment.

Survey for park users

What do you think of your local park? Is there any way it can be better?

The council has launched its 2025 survey for users of its park. Fill in the form at https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/Parks2025
