CASTLEFORD DAILY BRIEFING OF NEWS AND EVENTS 11 SEPTEMBER 2025

Compiled by Tony Wallis

A few years ago when on the Health Scrutiny Committee, we looked at the proposal to temporary close the maternity unit at Pontefract Hospital. We suspected then that the closure would become permanent.
Women in Castleford I talked to had mixed opinions. Some preferred it to stay open as it was local, others preferred Pinderfields Hospital as they regarded it as safer. In 'News', the maternity unit at Pontefract is to close. What do you think of the health service's announcement?

Another interesting event added in Heritage Open Days. A talk by Dave Smith on a social history of Castleford.  I'm looking forward to that.

Every morning I compile a helpful briefing of the latest news and events for Castleford. Initially intended to help me as a local councillor, I now publish it to the public. I hope you find it useful.

Saturday 13th September 2025. Salvation Army Citadel, Booth Street WF10 1SA. Solo theatre performance ‘From Old Bean Grow Bak Choy’.

The title is a metaphor, and while it may suggest a connection to gardening practices where bok choy can be regrown from scraps, its main meaning is the title of the performance exploring themes of roots and home.
