 COUNCIL RESOLUTION

As a council we strive to achieve that all our residents are safe both in public and in their homes. That is why I and my Labour colleagues support the motion from Councillor Maureen Cummings to increase the actions of tackling violence against women and girls. These measures include working with victims and services to understand the impact, ensuring education about healthy relationships, appointing a champion and a requirement that an update on actions goes to scrutiny within 12 months.

All women and girls should be treated with respect and not fear violence.

The council has just announced that some enforcement officers will wear body cameras as a deterrent and to record any evidence of anti-social behavior against them.

Back to council business, the portfolio holder for resources and property announced the sale of Castleford Civic Centre.

PAVEMENT CAFE LICENSES

The Licensing Committee decided on the 5th February not to charge for pavement cafe licenses, that the licensing period be increased to two years, and some changes to the policy to bring it in line with new legislation.

WYCA TRANSPORT COMMITTEE

We raised Arriva’s timetable changes that result in problems for students getting buses to school and a reduced evening service. We also asked for guidance from the rail operators on naming a train after a person in line with a request from Castleford Civic Society.

80 YEARS SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR II

The 80th anniversary of VE Day is on the 8th May and of VJ Day on 15th August. I attended a site visit with a veterans’ group that wants to hold a celebration at Queen’s Park on 10th May.

For a longer project, they hope to erect a statue of a soldier at the park.

HALIFAX TO CLOSE CASTLEFORD BRANCH

The group that operates Halifax, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland has announced branch closures including the Halifax on Carlton Street. The bank has confirmed to me that Halifax customers can use their accounts at Lloyds bank over the road when the Halifax branch closes in September. As reported in the Express, I am concerned that this means another vacant shop on Carlton Street.
