COUNCILLOR TONY WALLIS - DECEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

Here's an update on what’s been happening in our ward and across the council recently. I’d love to hear your thoughts, so please feel free to share your comments or ideas.

Boundary Changes

Just announced. The final report on boundary changes has been published, and Castleford Central and Glasshoughton will now expand to include Half Acres. This aligns with the proposal that my colleagues and I submitted. It’s great to see our efforts come to fruition, and we look forward to welcoming Half Acres into our ward. The changes start in 2026.

Festive Family Fun

Christmas is in full swing, and there are plenty of activities to enjoy with the family. The council’s ice-skating rink at the market, the Light Up Castleford event, and the Continental Street Market have all been a big hit.

For the little ones, Elf School is underway. These fun and creative sessions are running at Castleford Market on December 7th and 21st, and at Pontefract on the 14th.

Government Funding Boost

Some fantastic news on funding. On December 10th, Cabinet decided to accept nearly £10 million in government funding. Here’s how it’s being allocated:

£4 million will go towards renovating the historic Old Crown Court building in Wakefield.

£3.2 million will help create an Academy of Live Technology at Production Park in South Kirkby.

Production Park is already making waves in the creative industries, and it’s exciting to see it continue to grow. A new Netflix drama, Adolescence, will be filmed there. It’s great to see our district having successes.

Council Budget Challenges

The consultation for next year’s budget has now closed, and final decisions are being made. While our council’s situation isn’t as dire as some others, it’s still challenging.

Our priorities remains protecting frontline services while avoiding a Section 114 notice (essentially declaring bankruptcy). Unfortunately, we may still need to issue a 188 notice, which outlines potential redundancies. These are difficult decisions, but we’re committed to doing everything we can to safeguard services and jobs wherever possible.

That’s it for this update. If you have any questions, suggestions, or ideas, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Your input is always valued. Let’s keep working together to make our community the best it can be!

Wising you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Regards,
Tony
