Every morning, to make my work as a local councillor more efficient, I search the web for a daily briefing of news and events. While it was originally for my benefit, I’ve realised it is a service to share with others. It is a briefing so just headlines and sources I’ve come across and checked.

Saturday 13 July 10am to 4pm Pontefract Liquorice Festival. Pontefract town centre.


Now to 7 September. ’Jason and the Wakefield Adventure.’ Artist Jason Wilsher-Mills with the first large-scale exhibition of work in his hometown. Wakefield Exchange (WX).

  Compiled by Tony Wallis Yet another shop in Castleford town centre has closed (see below), this time after going into administration. There are questions to ask - why are shops in the town that seem to be trading well closing? If it's just on-line shopping to blame, why aren't all shops closing? Let me know your bonfire night tales. Today, two good news items about improving our town centre. The third of three murals has been given the go ahead. This is for the Bancroft Road subway. The subway has had a reputation for being unfriendly but this news marks a positive change. I'm looking forward to the 'Destination Castleford' boards. What do you think of the idea? And the second is the Old Mechanics Institute on Sagar Street, recently bought back by the council, getting the go ahead to become a community building.
