This month - some interesting planning applications, two successful community projects, an addition to the library and the last on the proposed new health centre near the train station.
Talking of train stations, this month I visited, with colleagues on the WYCA transport committee, the upgrade work at Huddersfield Station. There is no a regular train service to Huddersfield ad on to Manchester from Castleford. I covered the visit in a previous blog, please take a look if you haven’t already done so.
The Planning Applications
The Crimea Tavern at the end of Saville Road was an iconic building. Back in the seventies it was the meeting point for those doing a Friday night drinking tour of the town centre pubs. However, times change. Derelict and a shadow of its former self, the council has purchased it for demolition as part of the riverside park scheme.
The planning application for its flattening has just been submitted.
An application has also been received for the canopy between the phone shop and chemist on Carton Street to be removed. This canopy looks unsightly. Its removal will improve the pedestrian route from the train station and the underpass to Carlton Street.
Another application to temporary move the Al Murad tiles store from the riverside to the car park corner near to Sagar Street and the library. The existing store is due to be demolished as part of the riverside park. The move is temporary until a permanent location can be found.
In March the planning approved the application for a new Tigers’ ground (I spoke in favour) but it was subject to negotiations between the applicant and the planning department about some conditions. I’m happy to report that those talks have been completed and planning permission is now granted.
The Proposed New Health Centre
The council has to maintain a healthy budget. A difficult task given a combination of falling financial support and rising costs and demands. For these reasons, the proposed new health centre, which requires significant funding, has been postponed. We have been pursuing this much needed facility in the town centre for years and look to this set back being overcome. In the meantime, doctors’ services will still be provided from the existing surgeries.
Art work at the Library
This month a work of art moves into the library. A depiction of Castleford industry by the artist William Selby. The painting used to be housed in the Civic Centre, which has now closed. It will now be able to be seen by a wider audience.
